A mini-split handles two jobs, but in Fremont County one of them barely exists. Homes in Fremont County, ID have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. That means the compressor and refrigerant circuit are asked to move heat inward through cold outdoor air, not outward through a hot summer, and a contractor sizing a system here is solving a heating problem almost exclusively. Getting the heating capacity right for these winters matters more than any cooling spec on the data sheet. An installer who treats this as a balanced heating-and-cooling situation will size the indoor and outdoor units around assumptions this county does not support.

Electrical panels in much of Fremont County's housing stock were sized for the loads those houses originally carried, and a mini-split draws differently than what those panels were built to serve. Half the homes in Fremont County, Idaho were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a mini-split installation here opens the panel before pricing anything else, because the service capacity decides whether the job is straightforward or whether an upgrade has to be priced alongside the unit.

The Mini-split Parts a Contractor Works With During Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with a dark shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air handlers, a sofa, table and chair inside, and refrigerant lines running to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. It draws room air across its coil and delivers conditioned air back into the space. Outside the house, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket and houses the compressor and the components that do the heavy lifting.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small penetration in the wall, carrying the fluid that links the indoor and outdoor sides. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to move moisture out of the house, and a dedicated electrical disconnect sits near the outdoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for this house.
