Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with light beige siding, a covered front porch, and gabled roof, set behind a mown lawn, shrubs and leafy trees, with a concrete walkway leading to a wet sidewalk and street in low sunlight.

A contractor diagnosing a mini-split in Lemhi County starts from what the compressor has actually been doing: pushing heat into the house through cold months, with the refrigerant circuit under the stress of low outdoor temperatures rather than shedding heat out. Homes in Lemhi County, ID have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The cooling side of the system, the condenser fan, the contactor, the high-side pressure cycle, sits essentially untouched. So when a compressor fails here, the contractor looks at cold-weather heating load and extended run times against low ambient temperatures, not at compressor wear from summer cycles that never arrived.

Refrigerant lines, drain paths, and the brackets holding an indoor head in place all carry the history of what came before the current system. Half the homes in Lemhi County, Idaho were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A unit installed into that stock has usually been adapted around earlier decisions, and when a contractor opens it for a repair, what they find in the line set connections or the mounting points reflects those earlier choices. A part that fits the spec sheet correctly can still seat poorly if the surface it meets was cut for something else.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing an interior wall-mounted air conditioning unit connected by a line to an outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is where most problems announce themselves first. A contractor will look at its fan, its evaporator coil, and its sensors when the unit is not cooling or heating as it should. The outdoor compressor unit, which sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house, is the other main suspect when the system stops working altogether.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying the refrigerant that makes the whole system work. A contractor checks that line set for leaks or damage, and also inspects the electrical connections and the condensate drain line, which pulls moisture away from the indoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific system and home.
