A contractor diagnosing a mini-split here starts with the heating side. Homes in Clearwater County, ID have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. That means the compressor, the reversing valve, and the defrost controls have been carrying the full seasonal load while the cooling side has sat idle. An idle refrigerant circuit can develop its own faults, including valve seat degradation and refrigerant migration, that show up as cooling failures even though cooling was never the demand. The repair quote reflects that split: parts associated with heating cycles wear on a different schedule than those tied to cooling, and a contractor prices accordingly.

Refrigerant lines in a house that has seen two or three heating systems come and go are not the same lines the building started with. Splices, reroutes, and field repairs accumulate, and a mini-split technician opening a unit here often has to account for that history before the equipment itself becomes the focus. Half the homes in Clearwater County, Idaho were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means the wiring and line set a contractor finds at the outdoor unit are worth checking independently of whatever fault code the system is throwing.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a gray house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms with furniture, connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts on an interior wall and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. It draws room air across its coil and pushes conditioned air back out. When a room stops heating or cooling properly, the air handler is where a contractor begins: the coil, the fan motor, and the drainage line each have their own failure patterns.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house and holds the compressor and the second coil. The refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small penetration in the wall, carrying the working fluid that the whole system depends on. A fault in the compressor, a refrigerant leak along the line set, or a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit will all stop the system in ways that look similar from inside the house.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific installation.
