A two-story house with light gray horizontal siding, dark gray shingled gable roofs and a dark front door, fronted by a large partly browned lawn under a clear blue sky.

Sizing a mini-split in Caribou County is a heating-only problem. Homes in Caribou County, ID have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor on a ductless system earns its keep by moving heat into the house through cold months, and a contractor quoting the job has to establish how far outdoor temperatures fall before they can choose a unit with enough capacity to hold the house at setpoint without constant short-cycling. A unit that is undersized runs hard against the coldest days and the heat exchanger and fan motor carry that strain. The contractor's load calculation here is not a formality.

Older wiring and undersized service panels are what slow mini-split installs in Caribou County more than anything else about the job. Half the homes in Caribou County, Idaho were built in 1972 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built to that standard was wired for a furnace and maybe window units, so the electrical infrastructure a contractor finds today was never meant to carry the dedicated circuits a mini-split requires. The ductwork question is simpler on a ductless system, but the panel question is not, and in stock like this it comes up on a regular basis.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What HVAC Installation Involves

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to a single outdoor condenser unit beside the building, with a sofa in one room and a bed in another.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, which is where a homeowner notices it first. It holds the coil and the fan that move conditioned air into the space. Each room or zone gets its own unit, and a contractor determines where on the wall it goes for the best coverage.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and the second coil. A set of refrigerant lines and a power and communication cable run through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and the contractor routes and seals that line set as part of the work.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home.
